Montmoreau City

Montmoreau City

By taking a step back, it is possible to get an overall view of the town of Montmoreau. Two monuments stand out from the landscape: the castle of Montmoreau, which dominates the valley of the Tude, and the church of Saint-Denys. The latter has a sumptuous 12th century Romanesque portal and can be visited all year round.

Not far away, 10 minutes by car, is Nonac, a small village near Montmoreau. Its particularity is to shelter the church of Saint-Hilaire, a jewel of Romanesque art. The exterior of the building, rather sober, contrasts with its interior decoration. Many painted scenes, with striking colors, are exposed there. But it is under the church that a treasure is hidden! In the center of the building, a hidden trap door will lead you to an ancient crypt. From there, you will be able to discover an illustration symbolizing the Crucifixion.

But what about the natural heritage in all this? Well, outdoor enthusiasts will be pleased. Montmoreau and its surroundings are full of walking paths. You will have the possibility of strolling along the Tude river, or to traverse the hillsides of Montmorélien in search of the orchids of the South Charente.

For the most courageous, it is possible to take the road of the ways of St Jacques de Compostelle. This thousand-year-old path crosses the commune of Puypéroux, towards Saint-Amant, to continue on Aubeterre. Let yourself be carried away by this mythical road and discover the emblematic landscapes of the South Charente. And who knows ?... Maybe this trip will be the start of your next adventure?
