Base VTT Sud-Est Charente - Circuit VTT n°7
Villebois-Lavalette
1 Place du Champ de Foire
16320 Villebois-Lavalette
Departure altitude: 154 m
The tour start with an ascent to the medieval castle of Villebois-Lavalette. Once there, you can take a path at the foot of the walls which takes you around the fortress. From there, you will have a striking view of the surrounding rolling plains and pastures.
Ten kilometres further on, you arrive near the village of Vaux-Lavalette! Huge cereal fields surround you as far as the eye can see. This landscape lends itself to a pleasant lunch break in the middle of the wheat and sunflowers.
The afternoon continues and you have finally arrived at the monolithic chapel of Saint-Georges de Gurat. This imposing church, carved into the side of the cliff, was built in the same manner as the church of Saint-Jean in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. Originally, this building was a natural cave. Over time, it was enlarged and then shaped by the hand of man to create a place of worship. Pilgrims on their long pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela used to stop here on their penitential walks. This chapel would have been built between the 11th and 12th centuries.
Finally, on the way back, you can admire the Dolmen de Chez Vinaigre in Ronsenac. This imposing boulder has been standing here for almost 6,000 years. A vast meadow surrounds the burial site and enhances the scenery.
