Saint-Romain
3 Route des Essards
16210 Saint-Romain
Departure altitude: 111 m
Departure from Saint-Martial! This village has a 12th century church with a beautiful gothic portal and a statue of Saint-Martial over the entrance. Then, once you have left the village, drive through the fields of corn, sunflowers and wheat. The view should be magnificent! The route will gradually leave the country roads and take the dirt roads.
Arrive at Saint-Quentin-de-Chalais. This village has a charming 12th century church overlooking the hill. It is recommended that you stop for a moment to admire its sculpted Romanesque facade, as well as its tabernacle classified as a "Monument Historique" located near the altar. Once you have visited the monument, go down to the village hall. A sheltered picnic area will allow you to regain your strength before starting the rest of the climb. Because believe us, the hardest part is yet to come!
After swallowing the bumps, you will see the village of Les Essards in the distance! A fountain of healing, which is said to have healed the wounds of a wounded soldier. Is this a legend or a true story? In any case, a chapel was erected on the site of the fountain to pay tribute to this extraordinary episode.
It is now time to return. Return to the starting point in Saint-Martial to finish this mountain bike route. Long climbs await you until the finish. Slow down and take the time to ride at your own pace.
