Base VTT Sud-Est Charente - Circuit VTT n°4
Villebois-Lavalette
52 Grand'Rue
16320 Villebois-Lavalette
Departure altitude: 155 m
From the centre of the village, head towards the church, then upwards to the Château de Villebois-Lavalette. This 10th century citadel, reputed to be invincible, has a dirt track around its walls. From here you can walk around and see the imposing defensive walls. However, be sure not to leave without tasting the Cornuelle, our local speciality. This aniseed biscuit, a friend of travellers and especially of pilgrims, makes an excellent snack.
A few miles further on, in Magnac-Lavalette, the tour will take you to the Mercerie castle, also known as the "Little Versailles of Charente". Its impressive 220 meters long façade gives it a majestic dimension... And for good reason! The interior is adorned with a thousand lights. Antique furniture, paintings, chandeliers and precious woods, marble from Italy, azulejos from Portugal... Nothing is too beautiful for this castle!
Climb the slopes again to reach Fouquebrune. Take a break in the countryside and admire its agricultural and floral scenery. Then, once you're back on the road, don't forget to pass through the small village of Charmant. As its name suggests, this village has a pretty market town. Take a walk inside the church and see the remarkable paintings on the ceiling. On your way out, you will probably notice the Charmant castle, which according to legend belonged to the Templars.
